National Welfare Summit II

National Welfare Monitoring & Advocacy Partnership (NWMAP)

November 20-22, 1998
DALLAS/FT. WORTH, TEXAS
Holiday Inn Central
2000 Beach Street

PURPOSE

As the agencies on the front lines working with people experiencing homelessness and poverty, we have unique knowledge of how people have been affected by welfare reform, in many cases moving from welfare to homelessness. This grassroots summit is an opportunity to come together in Dallas to continue to share current knowledge as well as implement our assessment tool nationally. Our purpose is to shape what we are learning into an advocacy agenda.

GOALS:

A working summit for grassroots organizations advocates, researchers and affected individuals and groups to have an opportunity to:

  • Become aware of what others around the country are doing to monitor and assess the impact of welfare reform in their communities

  • Increase our knowledge of proven grassroots techniques to assess and document these impacts on low income and homeless people

  • Develop a common set of tactics and strategies to communicate what we know to policy makers, the media and the general public

  • Implement an advocacy agenda through the National Welfare Monitoring & Advocacy Partnership that advocates for changes in welfare policy that are fundamental to long term family stability
